Carla, kenneling him is not necessary, but preventing him from playing with the other dog is. I posted some stuff about that in this thread:

my little guy is scheduled for surgery this coming Wednesday and i am very anxious. He is not used to being in a kennel at all and I'm worried that he will be very depressed since he is a momma's boy. Also i have another dog and I'm wondering if he will understand his playmate will not be able to play for several months. It's going to be a tough situation for us all.

Thank you for the information. This is the day after surgery and I am such a sucker for my lil bulldog(s). The surgeon was running late and we had to suffer by me calling every hour. Well Hemi was knocked out for most of the night with minimal yelping. during the day she is more coherent, my wife calls to tell me she is outside with hemi(I freaked) she seems to be doing well just hoping my lil bully girl gets better soon with 110% improvement.

UPDATE: everything went great with the surgery. It was a 100% tear. Ive been religious with the PT. The rehab was quite a production, but it paid off. Today is day 126 post op (TTA) and the surgeon said he can run off leash! My dog may be ready but Im not. Gonna have to get used to the idea.

Sometimes it is best for them to stay overnight. My dog is 6 days out from major surgery and she was kept for two nights. But she was at a hospital where she had 24 hour care. My vet, who referred me to the hospital, explained that I would want her to stay so they could monitor her vitals and keep her pain meds going. I know it is hard to leave them but sometimes it is the thing to do. I was worried, of course, but knew these kind people were taking care of my baby. She's doing great!
